Two island nights in Lochranza

Arran fits a short island break when the ferry times fit the hire. Make Brodick the arrival stop and Lochranza a two-night base. Our four-hire-day route gives the north two island nights and keeps the final night on the mainland. Add hire days for the southern villages.

Why choose it: An island atmosphere without the long drive to Skye; castle grounds, coast and village food make varied days.

The trade-off: Vehicle ferry availability sets the timetable. An afternoon collection and a tightly timed return sailing can squeeze the useful island hours.

Drive times and approach

Leg Planning allowance
Renfrew → mainland departure port Allow roughly 1–1½ hours once the actual port is confirmed
Brodick → Lochranza Allow 35–50 minutes driving

Driving estimates include the road journey only. Add sailing and vehicle check-in time.

Brodick arrival, a northern base, then the ferry

Brodick after the crossing

Use Brodick Castle's grounds for the arrival outing, then drive to Lochranza Campsite. The castle tearoom fits the visit better than searching for food after you have started north.

Lochranza, then west coast

Walk the castle waterfront and keep plenty of distance from the deer. Choose Machrie Moor or a west-coast stretch for the longer outing. Use Casks Café for daytime refreshments; Lochranza Country Inn is the village bar-meal option.

Leave time for the sailing

Pack and return towards the confirmed port. A Corrie food detour belongs on a longer island day, not in the ferry check-in buffer.

Castle tearooms and Lochranza meals

  • Casks Café and Stags Pavilion: Named north-island daytime choices. The campsite currently lists Stags Pavilion for breakfast and lunch rather than dinner.
  • Lochranza Country Inn: Community-owned village inn with bar meals.
  • Brodick Castle tearoom: Refreshments during the Brodick Castle estate visit. Fit this around the booked sailing and the onward drive to Lochranza.

Lochranza Campsite

Two nights here give you a full day on northern Arran without repacking. The campsite’s local guide lists daytime food nearby; deer need plenty of space.

Facilities: Grass campervan pitches and a few motorhome hardstandings; electric hook-up, heated washrooms, showers and laundry.

Pitch booking: Check vehicle-ferry space first. Busy dates can require a two-night minimum.

Alternative: Seal Shore Camping & Touring Site. At Kildonan in southern Arran: a different island plan, with extra driving to Lochranza.

Casks Café

Lunch and refreshments upstairs in Lochranza Distillery’s visitor centre. Works with the north-island base; a tasting needs a driver who is not drinking.
