The trip we would build

Arran fits a short island break when the ferry times fit the hire. Make Brodick the arrival stop and Lochranza a two-night base. The northern half provides enough for a three-day trip; add a day for southern villages instead of trying to complete the circumference before the return sailing.

Why choose it: An island atmosphere without the long drive to Skye; castle grounds, coast and village food make varied days.

The trade-off: Vehicle ferry availability sets the timetable. An afternoon collection and a tightly timed return sailing can squeeze the useful island hours.

Drive times and approach

Leg Planning allowance
Renfrew → mainland departure port Allow roughly 1–1½ hours once the actual port is confirmed
Brodick → Lochranza Allow 35–50 minutes driving

Rounded planning allowances, not live traffic predictions. Add sightseeing, meal stops and ferry check-in separately.

How to spend your days

Day 1: Brodick after the crossing

Use Brodick Castle's grounds for the arrival outing, then drive to Lochranza Campsite. The castle tearoom fits the visit better than searching for food after you have started north.

Day 2: Lochranza, then west coast

Walk the castle waterfront and keep plenty of distance from the deer. Choose Machrie Moor or a west-coast stretch for the longer outing. Use Casks Café for daytime refreshments; Lochranza Country Inn is the village bar-meal option.

Day 3: Leave time for the sailing

Pack and return towards the confirmed port. A Corrie food detour belongs on a longer island day, not in the ferry check-in buffer.

What matters locally

Confirm the departure port as well as the sailing: mainland Arran terminals can change. Book the van crossing before committing to island nights. For a noon handback, a mainland final night is the more comfortable plan. CalMac's current notice moves Ardrossan services to Troon from 7 September to 8 October 2026 during harbour works.
