Driving

When to go
Spring–autumn; confirm seasonal touring dates

Mainland roads; no vehicle ferry

Why this trip: Melrose and Jedburgh give the abbeys and Border towns their own overnight bases.

The trade-off: This is a history and walking trip; larger hill walks need more time than the town visits.

Renfrew → Melrose

Melrose Abbey

Things to do

Choose the Eildon Hills if conditions and your fitness suit, or the Tweed-side town trail for a gentler afternoon. Check the abbey’s current access before making it the only reason for your visit.

Melrose Abbey

Practical details

Some conservation-related access restrictions remain: check the current visitor page.

Eat & drink

Apples for Jam, Melrose: a daytime café in Melrose.

Sleep

Melrose Gibson Park Club Campsite: Melrose.

Practical details

Use a Melrose town base for the abbey area, Tweed walks and an evening meal. Book under the Club’s touring terms before fixing the restaurant night.

Facilities: Electric hook-up, toilet block, accessible shower, laundry and motorhome waste/service point.

Alternative: Jedburgh Club Site. A different Borders base: allow for the drive between the towns.

Day 2

Jedburgh and Kelso

Day 2Jedburgh and Kelso35–50 miles · 1–1.5 h driving

Melrose → Jedburgh

Things to do

Visit Jedburgh’s town trail and Castle Jail, then choose Kelso’s riverside or abbey area. Two towns are enough for a day; leave time to sit down rather than chasing every ruin.

Eat & drink

Café U, Kelso: a daytime food stop in Kelso.

Sleep

Jedburgh Club Site: Jedburgh.

Practical details

A Jedburgh overnight for the Castle Jail and town trail. It puts the next morning’s start in the southern Borders, so allow for the longer drive back to Renfrew.

Facilities: Grass and hardstanding pitches, electric options, toilets, showers and accessible facilities.

Alternative: Melrose Gibson Park Club Campsite. A different base; revise the driving leg and confirm a touring pitch.

Day 3

Return to Renfrew

Day 3Return to Renfrew100–115 miles · 2.5–3 h driving

Jedburgh → Renfrew

Breakfast at your final pitch, then return to Renfrew. Aim to arrive around 11:00, allowing time for traffic, refuelling and the standard noon handback.

Eat & drink

Breakfast in the van before departure.

Sleep

No overnight: return day.
