Why choose this route?

Trade the busiest Highland roads for Melrose’s abbey, the Eildon Hills and Border towns. Pick one proper walk and leave time for a bakery stop and a riverside pitch.

Scottish Borders — good for: A coherent short mainland trip, with walkable towns and meals that can anchor an evening. The compromise: Less of a remote wilderness feel. Abbey access can change, so the trip should work even when part of a monument is closed.

Itineraries

Day 1

Melrose

Collection: Allow for the 14:00 handover in Renfrew before starting this day. Choose an evening stop that fits the campsite’s check-in time.

Choose the Eildon Hills if conditions and your fitness suit, or the Tweed-side town trail for a gentler afternoon. Check the abbey’s current access before making it the only reason for your visit.

☕ Eat & drink

Apples for Jam, Melrose — recommended in Thirlestane Castle’s local guide.

🌙 Sleep

Melrose Gibson Park Club Campsite — check booking and membership terms.

Make it work: Use the council’s town trails for a walk with local history.

Day 2

Jedburgh and Kelso

Visit Jedburgh’s town trail and Castle Jail, then choose Kelso’s riverside or abbey area. Two towns are enough for a day; leave time to sit down rather than chasing every ruin.

☕ Eat & drink

Café U, Kelso — listed in this Borders food guide.

🌙 Sleep

Jedburgh Club Site — a named overnight option.

Make it work: If returning at noon tomorrow, use this as a daytime outing and move closer to Renfrew before the evening.

Day 3

Return to Renfrew

Today is the return journey, with standard handback by 12 noon. Check live traffic, allow time to refuel and arrive at the agreed return point. Optional sightseeing and cafés come after the return only, unless a later handback has been agreed.

Food: Breakfast in the van before leaving your final pitch keeps the morning flexible. Sleeping: No overnight pitch is included for this final hire day; book an additional night if extending.
