Glencoe by campervan
Mountain scenery from the A82, a woodland walk and a proper evening in the glen.

The trip we would build
The drive over Rannoch Moor is part of this visit. Give Glencoe two nights if you want a full day outside the van; one night fits a shorter Loch Lomond trip but leaves less room for the weather. The village and lower glen are useful bases even when the summits disappear into cloud.
Why choose it: Big Highland scenery without an island crossing; strong low-level and indoor alternatives.
The trade-off: The roadside viewpoints fill up. Mountain walks need much more preparation than a short woodland circuit.
Drive times and approach
| Leg | Planning allowance |
|---|---|
| Renfrew → Glencoe | Budget 2–2½ hours before sightseeing stops |
| Tyndrum lunch stop | Adds meal time to the A82 approach |
Rounded planning allowances, not live traffic predictions. Add sightseeing, meal stops and ferry check-in separately.
Map of the area
Area markers show the stages of the trip. Follow each venue's directions for its entrance and parking.
How to spend your days
Day 1: Across the moor, then settle in
Stop at The Real Food Café in Tyndrum for fish and chips on the way north. Take the Three Sisters viewpoint only if a proper parking space is available. Stay at Glencoe Club Site or Invercoe rather than adding Fort William to the evening.
Day 2: Lochan, coffee and the glen
Follow the 1.6 km Glencoe Lochan Trail: the forestry guide gives about 30 minutes walking, but allow longer for stops. Crafts & Things is a coffee and baking stop in the village. For dinner, Clachaig Inn gives the day a glen setting; arrange the journey back to the pitch before ordering drinks.
Food worth fitting into the trip
- Crafts & Things — Village coffee, home baking and a craft shop.
- Clachaig Inn — A named pub-food choice in the glen.
- The Real Food Café — An en-route lunch in Tyndrum, not a Glencoe village restaurant.
Where we would base the van
- Glencoe Club Site — Choose a vehicle hardstanding; the site's grass pitches are for tents.
- Invercoe Highland Holidays — An alternative by Loch Leven for a village-area base.
What matters locally
Glen Etive is a narrow dead-end detour, not a road onward to Oban. The Lochan Trail can hold surface water after heavy rain. Use the Glencoe visitor centre when the weather makes the mountain outing a poor choice.
