Why choose this route?
From Royal Deeside to north-east fishing towns and Speyside, this is a circuit of changing landscapes and local food. Travel from Renfrew sits outside the official 250-mile loop.
Speyside & Moray — good for: A trip with a clear food-and-drink identity, plus walks and coastal alternatives for non-whisky drinkers. The compromise: The driver cannot join a tasting and drive onward. Distillery geography and rural transport need planning before booking several visits.
Cairngorms — good for: Good for families who want activities and short outings; several lower-level alternatives to exposed hill routes. The compromise: The drive north is substantial, and a forest base does not make the mountain plateau an easy walk. Some familiar blog routes are currently closed.

Itineraries
Day 1
Perth
Collection: Allow for the 14:00 handover in Renfrew before starting this day. Choose an evening stop that fits the campsite’s check-in time.
Use Perth as a gentle first-night staging point before the A93 mountain road. Choose a riverside walk or one heritage visit if collection leaves enough daylight.
Make it work: Check mountain-road conditions before heading through Glenshee.
Day 2
Braemar
Make the Linn of Dee your main walk, or stay in Braemar for a shorter village outing. The A93 pass is part of the experience; give it time.
Make it work: Use the visitor estate’s current trail information rather than heading onto the plateau without preparation.
Day 3
Aberdeen
Choose the city’s granite streets and a museum or gallery as a change from countryside driving. Use a suitable car park and explore the centre on foot.
Make it work: City parking and the pitch are separate: do not assume a town car park is an overnight stop.
Day 4
Banff coast
Choose Portsoy’s harbour or a coast walk as your main outing, with Cullen or Portknockie as an optional food stop.
Make it work: This is a harbour-and-coast day; keep whisky-country visits for tomorrow.
Day 5
Elgin and Moray coast
Choose Elgin’s heritage or a coastal village such as Portsoy; do not try to cover the entire Moray coast in one afternoon.
Make it work: If tomorrow is handback, move south after the outing. This is a longer transfer day, not another northern overnight.
Day 6
Grantown-on-Spey
Use Grantown’s shops and nearby woodland as a slower day between longer transfer legs. Add a booked Speyside visit only if it leaves time for the walk.
Make it work: A driver-free distillery day works best from one base, with transport arranged in advance.
Final-night plan: Finish the outing early enough to move south. Use a booked Perthshire pitch such as Invermill Farm or Blair Castle Caravan Park. This transfer is part of today’s driving; extend the hire if you want to stay here tonight.
Day 7
Return to Renfrew
Today is the return journey, with standard handback by 12 noon. Check live traffic, allow time to refuel and arrive at the agreed return point. Optional sightseeing and cafés come after the return only, unless a later handback has been agreed.
Food: Breakfast in the van before leaving your final pitch keeps the morning flexible. Sleeping: No overnight pitch is included for this final hire day; book an additional night if extending.
