Isle of Skye by campervan
Three island days work better than trying to collect Skye's famous photographs in one lap.

The trip we would build
Split the island into a south/Carbost day, a Portree and Trotternish day, and a spare day for the weather. A Portree base makes the north easier; it does not make every corner of Skye close. Reach the island by the A87 bridge, or build a booked Mallaig–Armadale ferry into a longer west-coast route.
Why choose it: Distinctive landscapes and worthwhile food stops; the bridge gives you an alternative to ferry travel.
The trade-off: Long approach from Renfrew, crowded landmark parking and slow detours. A rushed weekend leaves little time on the island.
Drive times and approach
| Leg | Planning allowance |
|---|---|
| Renfrew → Portree via bridge | Plan 5–6 hours of driving, plus breaks |
| Skye Bridge → Portree | Local visitor guidance suggests about 55 minutes |
Rounded planning allowances, not live traffic predictions. Add sightseeing, meal stops and ferry check-in separately.
Map of the area
Area markers show the stages of the trip. Follow each venue's directions for its entrance and parking.
How to spend your days
Day 1: Carbost with lunch as the anchor
Make Café Cùil the brunch or lunch stop for the west-island day. Add a Cuillin-side outing that suits the weather, then return to your pitch. Carbost is a detour from the ferry approach, not a café next to Armadale.
Day 2: Trotternish without a checklist
Start with Birch on Bayfield Road in Portree. Give the Storr or Quiraing the main part of the day; trying to walk both and complete every roadside stop makes parking and transfers dominate. Keep another island day free for the place hidden by cloud.
Food worth fitting into the trip
- Birch, Portree — Coffee on Bayfield Road before or after the northern outing.
- Café Cùil, Carbost — Hebridean-inspired brunch and lunch worth building the western day around.
Where we would base the van
- Portree Campsite — A practical base for Portree and Trotternish; use several nights instead of daily pitch moves.
What matters locally
Passing places are for traffic, and a full viewpoint car park is a reason to come back later. Put the last overnight on the mainland for a noon handback; Portree to Renfrew is a substantial transfer, not a relaxed final morning.
