Why choose this route?
Small ports, Whithorn’s archaeology and a bookable farm experience make the south-west more than a scenic driving loop. Use seven days to stop properly rather than collect viewpoints.
Dumfries & Galloway — good for: A south-west alternative with art, archaeology and forest landscapes; useful for visitors who have already toured the Highlands. The compromise: Coastal peninsulas are longer detours than they look, and cloud can remove the dark-sky element entirely.

Itineraries
Day 1
Ayrshire coast
Collection: Allow for the 14:00 handover in Renfrew before starting this day. Choose an evening stop that fits the campsite’s check-in time.
Use Culzean as the main afternoon stop: woodland, coastal views and the Swan Pond can fill the time without another long drive.
Make it work: Culzean is in South Ayrshire; do not confuse it with a Dumfries town stop.
Day 2
Stranraer
Use Stranraer as a gateway to the Rhins, or book Kitchen Coos & Ewes for a specific farm experience on the way south.
Make it work: Reserve the farm tour first; it is a detour, not an inclusion in your van hire.
Day 3
Portpatrick
Explore the harbour and choose a short coast-path section. Keep exposed clifftop walks for suitable weather.
Make it work: Use the harbour as the relaxed focus rather than promising several distant headlands in one day.
Day 4
Whithorn
Make the Whithorn Trust exhibitions and roundhouse visit the focus, then choose the Isle of Whithorn waterfront if you have time.
Make it work: Check guided-tour availability before arrival.
Day 5
Kirkcudbright
Explore the artists’ town and harbour, with the Whithorn Trust as a separate heritage outing if you have time. Avoid turning the day into several distant coastal detours.
Make it work: For wildlife rather than another town, investigate Threave separately; access and wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.
Day 6
Dumfries
Choose a Burns-related town visit or a Nith-side walk, keeping one main stop rather than adding every castle nearby.
Make it work: This is also a sensible stage for turning towards home.
Day 7
Return to Renfrew
Today is the return journey, with standard handback by 12 noon. Check live traffic, allow time to refuel and arrive at the agreed return point. Optional sightseeing and cafés come after the return only, unless a later handback has been agreed.
Food: Breakfast in the van before leaving your final pitch keeps the morning flexible. Sleeping: No overnight pitch is included for this final hire day; book an additional night if extending.
