Outer Hebrides by campervan
An island journey paced by ferries, beaches and weather, with a genuine buffer before home.

The trip we would build
A Barra–Uists–Harris–Lewis journey needs about ten days and carefully matched vehicle crossings. For a shorter hire, choose Harris and Lewis or Barra and the Uists instead of compressing the whole chain. The Uist causeways let you explore several islands by road; Harris adds another ferry stage.
Why choose it: Atlantic beaches, crofting landscapes and island history make a very different holiday from a mainland loop.
The trade-off: The greatest booking complexity of these guides. Strong winds can change both sailings and how comfortable an exposed pitch feels.
Drive times and approach
| Leg | Planning allowance |
|---|---|
| Renfrew → Oban for a Barra sailing | Allow 2–2½ hours driving, plus check-in |
| Island crossings | Use the dated CalMac timetable; sailing and waiting time are separate from driving |
| Harris → Stornoway | Allow approximately 1–1½ hours depending on starting point |
Rounded planning allowances, not live traffic predictions. Add sightseeing, meal stops and ferry check-in separately.

Area markers show the stages of the trip. Follow each venue's directions for its entrance and parking.
How to spend your days
Day 1: Barra and the Uists
Use Borve Camping & Caravan Site for Barra, then a booked crossing to the Uists. Give Balranald's beach and reserve a whole outing from a North Uist base; follow the reserve's guidance around nesting birds.
Day 2: Harris with a local food stop
After the booked Berneray–Leverburgh crossing, use Scarista or a nearby beach as the afternoon. Croft 36 in Northton is the baking and food stop; it belongs to south Harris rather than a rushed detour from Stornoway.
Day 3: Lewis, then a mainland buffer
Choose a west-Lewis heritage day or Stornoway and its harbour. The Boatshed at the Royal Hotel provides a named restaurant evening. Stay at Laxdale near Stornoway before the booked mainland crossing, then retain a mainland night before handback.
Food worth fitting into the trip
- Croft 36, Northton — A south-Harris bakery and food stop.
- The Boatshed, Stornoway — A harbour-facing restaurant for the Lewis stage.
Where we would base the van
- Borve Camping & Caravan Site — For the Barra stage.
- Balranald Hebridean Holidays — For North Uist and the reserve area.
- Laxdale Holiday Park — A Stornoway-area base before the mainland crossing.
What matters locally
Book every vehicle crossing against the dates before allocating fixed nights. Keep ferry check-in time outside the sightseeing plan. Buy supplies before remote stages and account for limited Sunday trading on parts of the island chain. Strong winds call for a separate decision about opening the pop-top.
