Loch Lomond by campervan
A first campervan weekend with an evening on the loch, rather than a day spent getting there.

The trip we would build
Make Luss the overnight anchor and Balloch the easy return-day stop. The west shore suits an afternoon collection from Renfrew: you can settle into the van, walk to the water and still have a village evening. The east shore is a separate road journey, so save Balmaha for a longer stay.
Why choose it: Short approach from Renfrew; a lochside pitch and village food can make the first evening feel like a holiday.
The trade-off: Luss gets busy, and the A82 can be slow. This is a lively visitor village rather than a secluded Highland retreat.
Drive times and approach
| Leg | Planning allowance |
|---|---|
| Renfrew → Luss | Allow 30–40 minutes |
| Luss → Balloch | Around 15–25 minutes |
Rounded planning allowances, not live traffic predictions. Add sightseeing, meal stops and ferry check-in separately.
Map of the area
Area markers show the stages of the trip. Follow each venue's directions for its entrance and parking.
How to spend your days
Day 1: Arrival: Luss on foot
Book Luss Caravan & Camp Site, then walk the cottages, pier and church area. Eat at The Village Rest rather than driving to another village for dinner. Buy breakfast supplies before collection so the first evening stays simple.
Day 2: Morning: Balloch before home
Pack the van, then use Balloch Castle Country Park for a waterside walk. Keep the east-shore circuit for another trip; it adds driving to a morning better spent outdoors.
Food worth fitting into the trip
- The Village Rest — Café and bistro in Luss: the natural meal stop for the village evening.
Where we would base the van
- Luss Caravan & Camp Site — The choice for a lochside night with Luss nearby.
- Lomond Woods — Choose the Balloch base when shops and the southern end of the loch matter more than a Luss evening.
What matters locally
Use the signed visitor car parks; the pier and residential lanes are walking destinations. Lochshore permit areas have specific vehicle rules, so a camping permit does not automatically provide a campervan pitch.
