10-day Outer Hebrides island hop
Follow the islands from Barra through the Uists to Harris and Lewis, with baking, beach walks and authorised pitches along the way. Ferry bookings and a weather buffer shape the journey.
Planning estimates, rounded for a return loop from Renfrew. Moving time assumes roughly 32 mph overall on mixed Scottish roads and excludes sightseeing, traffic, stops and ferries. Fuel illustration assumes 34 imperial mpg and £1.55 per litre of diesel; actual consumption and pump prices vary. The average hides longer transfer days. Check each leg in a live route planner before booking.
How this trip works
A ferry-led island journey with mainland days at both ends. Verify every crossing against your dates before booking. Keep day eight/nine flexible for weather disruption, and move south on day nine for handback.
Leave room for Croft 36 at Northton and for a changed ferry sailing. Balranald’s open coast is a very different overnight prospect when the wind gets up.

Day 1: ObanView day +
Collection: Allow for the 14:00 handover in Renfrew before starting this day. Choose an evening stop that fits the campsite’s check-in time.
Leave the van in an appropriate town car park and explore the harbour on foot. A waterfront lunch and one viewpoint are a better combination than squeezing in a distant island crossing.
Make it work: For a ferry next morning, choose the pitch and departure time together; mainland drive time comes after disembarkation.
Day 2: BarraView day +
After the Oban crossing, keep the first island day simple: a coastal walk and time to settle into the pitch, with Castlebay as the next local outing.
Make it work: Book every vehicle crossing before fixing overnight dates.
Day 3: South UistView day +
Treat the Barra–Eriskay crossing and onward causeways as today’s main travel. Choose one beach or heritage stop instead of rushing to the far end of Uist.
Make it work: Your pitch need not be on the island named in today’s sightseeing stage; the Uists are linked by causeways.
Day 4: BenbeculaView day +
Use this as a slower causeway-and-coast day. Pick one open beach access and allow a weather buffer rather than another island-length drive.
Make it work: Out of the food cabin’s season, use the van kitchen and shop ahead.
Day 5: North UistView day +
Make Balranald’s beach and birdwatching the main outing, following reserve guidance around nesting wildlife. Leave the Harris ferry for its booked slot.
Make it work: An exposed pitch can be windy; check the forecast before opening the pop-top.
Day 6: HarrisView day +
After the Berneray–Leverburgh crossing, choose a Harris beach such as Scarista. Keep the beach stop separate from the ferry check-in buffer.
Make it work: Do not equate a beach car park with an authorised overnight pitch.
Day 7: Lewis and StornowayView day +
Choose one west-Lewis heritage stop or Stornoway’s town and harbour. Keep the final island night within reach of your booked mainland ferry.
Make it work: Weather disruption can consume the buffer day. A ten-day island hop needs every crossing checked against the dates.
Day 8: UllapoolView day +
Follow the west-coast road with one stop around Assynt, then make Ullapool’s harbour the evening focus. Resist combining several slow-road loops.
Make it work: Confirm seasonal service. Fill up and resupply before the next long transfer.
Day 9: AviemoreView day +
Choose Loch Morlich’s beach or an open Rothiemurchus woodland route as the main outing. Leave enough daylight for the southbound drive after your walk.
Make it work: October 2026 check: FLS reports wildfire-related closures affecting Ryvoan Pass / An Lochan Uaine. Do not follow older blog routes into closed areas.
Final-night plan: Finish the outing early enough to move south. Use a booked Perthshire pitch such as Invermill Farm or Blair Castle Caravan Park. This transfer is part of today’s driving; extend the hire if you want to stay here tonight.
Day 10: Return to RenfrewView day +
Today is the return journey, with standard handback by 12 noon. Check live traffic, allow time to refuel and arrive at the agreed return point. Optional sightseeing and cafés come after the return only, unless a later handback has been agreed.
Food: Breakfast in the van before leaving your final pitch keeps the morning flexible. Sleeping: No overnight pitch is included for this final hire day; book an additional night if extending.
Castles, wellness and rainy-day ideas
Pick one local castle, guided activity or indoor pool as a weather backup, and verify that it is open on your travel dates. Treat these as optional detours, not booked inclusions. Some facilities restrict non-resident access and require advance reservation.

Before you book
Reserve a suitable campervan pitch and check seasonal opening, local parking restrictions, vehicle ferry capacity where applicable and attraction opening times. Road and weather conditions can change quickly. Scotland’s access rights do not give vehicles a general right to stay overnight anywhere.
